Edwin A. Lutz, 97, died on Nov. 11, 2017. Born June 13, 1920 in Chicago to Max E. and Elizabeth A. Lutz. Lived in Rockford since 1924. Graduated from Rockford Schools, class of 1937 and U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. Enlisted in the U.S. Army at Camp Grant in 1942. Commissioned in 1943 at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland in the Army Ordnance Corps. Served three years in the European Theater of Operations with the U.S. Army 103rd Ordnance Base Maintenance Btl. Married Army nurse Charlotte E. Larson of Chicago in 1945 in Munich, Germany. Relieved of active, he remained in the Active Reserve until 1980 when he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel attached to Headquarters, Third U.S. Army. Employed as a service writer at Fran Kral Lincoln-Mercury Volvo and Williamson Motor Co. for more than 35 years. After retiring, he served as an assistant at Julian-Poorman-Welte and Wilber Christenson Funeral Homes. Also was a volunteer at radio station NIRIS (Northern Illinois Radio Information Service) reading newspapers to the blind, former member of Golden K Kiwanis, American Legion, VFW, Rockford Elks Lodge #64 and was President of Local Chapters of Reserve Officers Assn. Board member of Arlington Memorial Park Cemetery.
In 1996 married Anne C. Fairchild who died in 2011, Survivors are sons, Lt. Col. Eugene A. Lutz (Patti) of Phoenix, AZ, Terrence D. Lutz (Sommai) of Tempe, AZ; daughter-in-law, Catherine Lutz of Houston, TX; stepdaughter, Patricia A. Fairchild of Beaverton, OR; stepsons, Steven A. Fairchild (Sally) of Appleton, WI and Mark J. Fairchild (Margaret) of Philadelphia, PA; grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Predeceased by his first wife in 1989; son, Maj. Gregory J. Lutz; daughter-in-law, Edna; son, Thomas Lutz; and stepson, Michael Fairchild.
Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., on Thursday, November 16, 2017 in St. James Catholic Church, 428 N. Second St., with Fr. Leonard Jacobs officiating. Burial in Arlington Memorial Park Cemetery.
