Elizabeth E. Vavra, 96, died Jan. 27, 2017, in Rosewood Care Center after a battle with Lewy Body Dementia. Born July 12, 1920, to Thomas and Martha (McTaggart) Morris in Strawberry Point, IA. As a young woman she worked at the Savannah Army Depot in Savannah, IL, during World War II. After the war she relocated to Rockford, went to cosmetology school and worked as a beautician at Nell's Salon in downtown Rockford. She lived at the Rockford Women's Club at this time and made lifelong friends with other residents there.
She married Harvey R. Vavra on Nov. 19, 1953 and they had three children. She led an active life with her family into her 90's, whether it was swimming, gardening, walking or shooting hoops in the driveway. She played basketball for four years in high school and developed a love for the sport. She was an avid Chicago Bulls fan and was thrilled to see her beloved Michael Jordan play live at the United Center at the age of 77.
Predeceased by her parents; her siblings, Thomas, William, Walter, Emmit, Rosemary; and her husband, Harvey in 2015.
Survived by children, Patrick (Gladys) Vavra, Linda Vavra, Colleen Schwartz; grandchildren, Stephanie Wydeven, Michelle (Vincent) Skibicki, Aaron (Aly) Vavra, Timothy Vavra; great-granchildren, Jacob, Arianna, Vincent III, Mason, Luna and baby boy Vavra.
Funeral service at noon, Tuesday, January 31, 2017 in Sundberg Funeral Home, Ltd., 215 N. Sixth St., Rockford, IL with a visitation at 11:00 a.m. until time of service. Burial in Arlington Memorial Park. Online condolences may be left at sundbergfh.com.
