"Gordon "Gordy" Cummings III, 68, died suddenly at 8:35 p.m., Fri., July 10, 2009 in OSF St. Anthony Med. Center ER. Born May 25, 1941, in Hevner, OK, the son of Gordon F. Cummings, Jr. and Ophelia (Henry) Cummings. He graduated from Iowa State Univ. with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Married the former Sherry Stolp in Clinton, IA on June 1, 1963. They moved to Rockford in 1965. He was formerly employed by Clinton Corn Processing and later with Woodward Governor in Rockford. He retired as a Senior Project Engineer with Rockford Powertrain after 30 years of service and continued as a part-time consultant. He was the Pres. of Winnebago Sport Modelers Club (Kieselburg Forest Preserve) and an SAE member for 35+ years. Gordy was a lifetime inventor and held 12 U.S. patents on mechanical innovations. He also mentored in the Rockford Public Schools. Survivors include his wife, Sherry, 2 daughters, Leigh (Mark) Plock of Sigourney, IA, and Wendy (Chris) Van Vleet of Palo Alto, CA, a grandson, Brent Stauffenberg of Roscoe, and granddaughter, Cheyenne Rawhoof of Sigourney, IA, and a niece, Sarah Ratcliffe of Chicago. Predeceased by his parents and a sister, Pamela Cummings Ratcliffe. Memorial Service 3:00 p.m., Thurs., July 16, 2009 in Riverside Community Church, 6816 N. Second St., Machesney Park. Private interment at Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials to Klehm Arboretum or Noah's Ark."
