"Lester "Lek" Vance, 65, died at 2:07 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009 in his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Born Sept. 3, 1944, in Rockford, the son of Sim and Roberta (Butler) Vance. He was a graduate of Guilford High School. Married Dixie Kelso in Rockford on May 10, 1967. He was a decorated veteran of the US Army and served in Viet Nam. He served his apprenticeship with Sheet Metal Workers Local #219 and worked for the union for 32 years. Lek was a longtime member of American Legion Post #1207, Viet Nam Veterans of America, and was active with Viet Nam support groups. He enjoyed antiques and restorations. He loved wildlife, nature, and especially his dog, "Baby." Survivors include his wife, Dixie, a daughter, Angela Vance, a son, Mark Vance (and Susan Rogers), all of Rockford, 2 brothers, Wade (Sandy) Vance of Rockford, and Roscoe (Gloria) Vance of Minnesota. Predeceased by his parents, a brother, Vernon Vance and a sister, Betty Falzone. Service 1:30 p.m., Mon., Sept. 21, 2009 in Sundberg Funeral Home, Ltd., 215 N. Sixth St., Rockford, IL with Mike Todryk officiating. Burial in New Milford Cemetery. Visitation at the funeral home from noon until service time on Monday.
