Merrilyn Ruth (Buzzell) Cass was born on Aug. 8, 1920 in Delavan, WI, daughter of Merrill and Ruth (Shumway) Buzzell. She passed away on March 18, 2018. Lived in Chicago, IL 17 years coming to Rockford in 1937. Being a "South Sider" she was always a Chicago White Sox fan. (Go White Sox) In 1938 she graduated from Rockford Central High School. Married Woodrow Cass on June 21, 1940 in Rockford. He passed away on July 18, 1983. Merrilyn was employed at Amerock Corporation as a Human Resource Administrator for 36 years retiring in 1986. She was a member of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. She had been a volunteer at St. Anthony Hospital, North East Branch Library, Midway Village and Art Department of Rockford  at her great-grandpa's formerly owned Shumway Building. She was a member of the Moose Club, the Ingersoll 9 Hole Golf League and a card club since 1955, meeting twice monthly with five other friends.

She was a loving mother, sister, wife, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was an avid reader, always had a book around to pick up and enjoy. There was a great deal of traveling in her lifetime much of it centered around trips to Colorado to visit her daughter and family. Her trips to Hawaii were her highlights. Being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was important to her and her interest in them never waned. Surviving are son, Larry (Lori) Cass of Roscoe, IL, daughter, Marcia (Tom) Provost of Loveland, CO; grandchildren, Michelle (Gary) Rothmeyer of Cherry Valley, Dawn (Robert) Lierman of Weaversville, NC, Ladel (Arra) Cass of Rockton, IL, Megan Provost of CO, Chris (Venessa) Provost of Fort Collins, CO; great-grandchildren, Bradley Hamblock of Chicago , Andrea Hamblock of Rockford, Chelsea (Jordan) Oliver of NC, Davis and Ellery Cass of Rockton, IL and Jaelynn, Camden and Clayton Provost of Fort Collins, CO; step granddaughter, Jennifer Strick; great-grandchildren Michaela, Samantha, Nicholas, Alexander, Malik, and Isabella; and great-great-grandchild, Jesse; sisters, Patricia Black of Rockford and Leora Kelly of Davenport, Iowa; several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by husband, parents, brother, Robert Buzzell and sister, Nancy Cuthbertson, and special friend, Norm Schlee. A special thanks to Lori Cass who was always there to help Merrilyn for the past two years and Cor Mariae and OSF Hospice during her last days.

Visitation from 5 - 7 p.m., Thursday, March 22, 2018 in Sundberg Funeral Home, Ltd., 215 N. Sixth St., Rockford, IL. Funeral service at 11 a.m., Friday, March 23, 2018 in Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1829 N. Rockton Ave., Rockford, IL 61103, with visitation from 10 a.m. until time of service.
