Sophia Komarec Obituary

Sophia Komarec died March 9, 2018 at home surrounded by loved ones. Born in Poland, March 21, 1926 to Michael and Katarina Wozniak. She met Jan Komarec in Germany and they married in 1947. He died in 1973. They came to America in 1950, through Ellis Island, and freedom. She retired from National Lock after 25 years. She was a cancer survivor. Her love of travel took her abroad and 47 states. Member of Salem Lutheran Church and Mary's Circle. Survived by daughters, Hela Bursey, Sue Johnson (Steve); favorite granddaughter, Emily Harker whom she adored; grandsons, John Komarec, Mike Komarec; great-grandkids, Ally, Jacob, Lucas Harker, Ariel and Daniel Komarec, family in Poland and Ukraine. Predeceased by parents; husband; son, Ted Komarec; daughter-in-law, Pam Komarec; son-in-law, Steve Bursey; and brother Andre Wozniak. Special thank you to Rose from OSF Hospice for her compassionate care of our beloved mother.

Visitation from noon - 1 p.m., Wednesday, March 14, 2018 in Sundberg Funeral Home, Ltd., 215 N. Sixth St., Rockford, IL, with celebration of life beginning at 1 p.m. Memorials to Salem Lutheran Church or OSF Hospice.
